Another week, another message in a bottle

by Richard Perkins

A slow week on the personal front and the professional front, again. Though I posted two scenes form Chapter 6 last week, they haven’t had any readers yet. Sure sign that the story is developing too slowly to hold people’s attention. But then again, I already suspected that of my first draft. I’m not too certain that anyone is reading this blog on any regular basis, so this is a bit like throwing a message into the sea, as the title suggests.

I posted an excerpt on a Science Fiction and Fantasy readers forum last week to see if that got any interest. I actually received a couple of useful comments on the writing. Also 61 visits to read the post, though only two people left any feedback.

I’m realizing that I should probably buckle down and get all the way through the first draft, just to cement in my mind the proper sequence of events and interactions. Then I’ll go back through and tear it apart in a second revision to enhance the plot advancement, not be so heavy handed in the narration and world building, and flesh out the character development. So for those of you who have ready these first paragraphs, think of them as background research. The finished story (assuming I do manage to finish it) will only loosely resemble these scene drafts.

On the prefessional front, there is no news. I’m thinking about signing up for a short Solar PV Installer certification course. It’s not exactly the type of product engineering and development work I’d like to be doing. But at least I might be able to refer to my understanding of how the products are used in a real world environment.

I plan to post the scenes from Chapter 7 tonight, for anyone who may get around to reading them.

Cheers,

Perkins
