And they’re off!
by Richard PerkinsWell today has been my first official day of National Novel Writing Month. Though I’ve been working on character descriptions, settings, and an outline for a few weeks, this is the first day I’ve been able to write actual prose that counts toward my word total.
The fun began at the stroke of midnight. About 40 to 50 South Bay NaNoers descended on Denny’s between 11:00 and 11:30 PM to eat breakfast food, talk about writing, share their nervous anticipation and watch the clock tick. Then at the stroke of midnight, the excited babble dropped to a silence punctuated only by the frantic clacking of dozens of keyboards. Hey it may not be a million monkeys at a million typewriters, but it’s a start!
I worked until about 1:30 AM, when my word count was at a rather undignified 723. That counts as “limping off the starting line a a tortiose’s pace,” I’m afraid. After sleeping off the late night sugar crash (leftover Halloween candy is evil…) I was back at the keyboard this afternoon for a few hours at home. Then I rejoined some familiar faces at a local Panera from 2:00 to 4:30 for some more key pounding excitement. A little more work tonight after dinner, and I’m up to a moderately respectable 3394! Go me!
For those of you just dying to know what the new story is about, I’m still working on a synopsis. For now let’s just say it’s an epic adventure about an assassin air mage who decides to go rogue after ten seasonturns of unquestioning loyalty when he falls in love with one of his targets.
I’ll post some excerpts in a few days, once I’ve decided on a title for the new series. If you like stats, have a gander at this colorful chart. Ooh… ahh… word count.
